Get spectacular experiences – from surfing in Lofoten to Europe’s big cities. Learn professional photo techniques that take your photos and films to new heights!

Do you want to become a better photographer?

On our photography program you’ll learn professional techniques to capture the northern lights, stars, studio portraits, and action sports. You’ll pick up tricks to make your photos more engaging and know what to look for on location. We use natural light, flashes, and LED lights, and you’ll be trained in lighting setups for the best results.

Modern editing
You get the full Adobe package and learn Photoshop, Lightroom, and Camera RAW – from classic techniques to the latest AI features. You’ll also create presets and effects that stand out.

Photos and film
A good photographer delivers both. During the year we work on several film projects, editing in DaVinci Resolve – the industry’s leading software.

Analog magic
In our darkroom you’ll develop your own black-and-white photos. We have cameras and film for you.

Experiences that inspire
You’ll wakeboard, sleep in hammocks, fly drones, ski or snowboard in Trysil, and even join a TV recording in Oslo. We surf in Lofoten, chase the northern lights, meet sea eagles, explore big cities, and visit exhibitions. These adventures give you skills, confidence, and memories for life.

Projects and topics include: camera technique, composition, lighting, editing and manipulation, analog photography, travel photo and film, street and landscape, AI in photography, portraits, food, stars and northern lights, timelapse, stop motion, film production, and exhibitions.

Create your own dream trip through Europe!

The Music – Band/Vocal and Photo/Experience classes travel together. We start in historic Split on the Croatian coast, with turquoise seas and charming alleys among ancient ruins.

From Split the trip continues in groups. Each group plans transport, accommodation, and activities, creating their own unique journey. Many choose to visit Ljubljana in Slovenia, Bratislava in Slovakia, Vienna in Austria, and Prague in the Czech Republic. Others also explore smaller places like Graz in Austria, Lake Bled in Slovenia, Dresden in Germany, and Wroclaw in Poland.

Finally, we all gather in Berlin, wrapping up the trip with galleries, a jazz club, and sightseeing.

Lofoten

Lofoten is ranked among the world’s top ten travel destinations. In March the light returns, and the colors are spectacular.

You’ll join the hunt for the northern lights and breathtaking landscapes, go on a sea safari with a sea eagle guarantee, and take a road trip to famous photo spots. We’ll also dive into the ocean and try “arctic surfing.”

At the very start of the school year, the whole school travels to Glitterheim in Jotunheimen national park. Here we attempt to climb Glittertind, Norway’s second-highest peak at 2452 meters. (Don’t worry, if hiking isn’t your thing, you can choose a shorter trail).

In the evenings we play cards, relax, and quickly get to know each other.

Applicants must be 18 years old at the start of the school year or turn 18 during the school year. There are no other specific admission requirements.

Priority criteria

  • Applicants who are 18 years old at the start of the school year or turn 18 during the school year.
  • Applicants residing in Norway and former students applying for readmission.
  • Applicants residing in the EU, EEA or the United Kingdom.
  • 10% of the school's maximum capacity is reserved for international applicants.

Admission process

  1. Submit your application

    You can apply for admission from 1 October in the year before your intended start. This applies to all Norwegian folk high schools.

    There is no application deadline, but we recommend applying early, as some courses may receive more applications than there are places available.

  2. Admissions begin – offers are sent out

    You will start receiving responses to applications from 15 November. This date is the same for all Norwegian folk high schools. If you apply after 15 November, your application will be processed on a rolling basis.

  3. Accept your offer

    We need you to respond to your offer, and we naturally hope you'll accept your place! You can confirm your acceptance by email or SMS. You have 14 days to respond.

  4. Your place is confirmed

    Once you have received an offer, accepted it and paid the enrolment fee, your place at the school is secured.

A year without grade pressure

At Elverum folkehøgskole you will get the oportunity to develop as a person, challenge yourself and your values, and form lasting relations. All without the pressure of grades or exams. Choose a year filled with experiences, new friends, opportunities, and activities around the clock – without the pressure of grades. We offer full-year and half-year courses, and our students are on average 19 years old. Most come from Norway, but many also come from Europe and beyond.

More than 30 electives and plenty of activities

In your main subject you can focus on what you love or try something completely new! You can choose from more than 30 electives, and in addition there are student evenings, concerts, handball matches, and much more. There’s always something to join in on!

Perfect location with both nature and city nearby

The school is close to the town center, with a swimming spot and outdoor areas right outside the door. In summer you can play football and volleyball, and in winter we build a rail park in the yard for skiing and snowboarding. You’ll have access to studios, workshops, a gymnasium, fitness room, and great facilities for both creative and practical subjects.

Our teachers are passionate about their subjects and provide close follow-up. You are taken seriously, there is always someone on duty if you need help, and we do our best to make sure you thrive. We have a large and inclusive community, with students from all over Norway and many international students each year.
