Africa - Aid/Culture (Spring)

Send application

Meet exciting culture and wildlife in Kenya. Join us to learn creative and proper assistance!

On the exotic Muslim island of Lamu in Kenya – where cars have been replaced with donkeys – you get to sail on the local sailboats "dhows" at sunset, fish and experience a beautiful "hakuna matata" culture. There will be good encounters with the everyday life of Muslims – Swahili cuisine and language.

In Elverum, we visit older people, help young refugees with inclusion in the local community, have pledges, aid marathons and letters of support, to name a few ways to fill the aid account.

The purpose of folk high school is "education", or personal development. Throughout the school year, you get to challenge yourself, collaborate with others and actively participate in the community.

Education is about mastering things like laundry, cooking, cleaning and your own finances. It is about taking part in democracy, culture and sport, getting involved voluntarily, gaining an ecological awareness, cooperating, resolving conflicts and travelling.

At the folk high school, you can study almost anything – from arts to extreme sports, and everything in-between. The goal is what’s in Norwegian called "danning". A good translation might be "formation".

You will get the oportunity to develop, challenge yourself and your values, and form lasting relations. All without the pressure of grades or exams.

Key terms for the school year are

  • Reflection
  • Equality
  • Tolerance
  • Respect
  • Democracy
  • Culture.

We offer full-year courses, half-year course fall and half-year course spring, and our students average at the age of 19. The majority comes from Norway, but many others come from Europe and beyond.
