Welcome to Bergen – Norway’s historic gateway to the sea! During your visit, you will experience a city that combines rich maritime traditions with unique and colorful architecture. Bergen is more than just beautiful scenery – it’s a place where the past and present come together.

Maritime Traditions

Bergen has been an important seaport for over a thousand years. As one of the key cities in the Hanseatic League during the Middle Ages, Bergen was once a center for international trade. Goods like fish, grain, and textiles were shipped to and from Europe, and the city grew wealthy from the sea.

You’ll visit places like Bryggen, the old Hanseatic wharf, where you can walk between wooden buildings once used by German merchants. Today, this area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reminding us of Bergen’s strong connection to the ocean and global trade.

Fishing is still an important industry, and the nearby Fish Market (Fisketorget) is a lively spot where you can see (and taste!) fresh seafood.

Visit Oslo - the capital of Norway

Welcome to Oslo! As you spend a few days in Norway’s capital, you’ll get the chance to explore more than just the city – you'll also learn about important values that shape Norwegian society: democracy and traditions.

Democracy in Norway

Norway is known for being one of the most democratic countries in the world. The political system is based on equality, freedom of speech, and participation. While in Oslo, you may visit the Parliament (Stortinget), where laws are debated and decisions are made for the country. You’ll also see how everyday citizens can take part in shaping society through voting, open debates, and grassroots movements.

In Norway, trust between people and the government is high. This is because transparency, fairness, and human rights are core values in the democratic system.

In the autumn, we travel to Litle Færøy – a tiny island as far west as you can go!
A place where you'd never think anyone could live.
Here, Roar lives with a few wild sheep.
We explore life on the coast: you'll learn to row and sail.
We cook our own food, catch and clean fish, and live simply.
One week where the simple life is in focus.

Stølstur til Upsete

The school has a lovely old mountain cabin beautifully situated along the Bergen Railway, just before Upsete Station. 

During the second week of the school year, the entire school travels up to the mountain cabin. The trip is designed to suit everyone—some go on long hikes in the mountains, while others fish, swim, build campfires, or play guitar outside the cabin.

This trip is an incredible opportunity to strengthen the sense of community at the school. We start the school year with a shared experience in some of the most beautiful nature Norway has to offer. It’s also a great opportunity to get to know fellow students, teachers, and other school staff better.

School trip to Hardanger

At the end of the school year, we are going on a fantastic trip to Hardanger. We will spend the night in beautiful Rosendal, and during the trip there will be lots of cool activities for you to join in. We will go to Norway's only barony and get a tour of the old castle, we will try our hand at putball (football golf), go on mountain hikes, and swim in both fjords and mountain lakes. On the way home, we will visit the fantastic Bondhusvatnet, one of the most photographed natural areas in Western Norway. When a folk high school year comes to an end, it is extra nice to share such experiences with friends from the whole school. We travel a lot with the lines during the school year, and therefore it is especially nice to be the whole group of students together on this trip.
