Outdoor Life Norway - Spring semester

Send application

Fancy a year together with other young people, enjoy beautiful vistas , carry a heavy pack to the mountains, sit in a kayak, walk on a glacier and cook on a fire? Then this is the program for you!

Versatility is a word that describes this program well. We use the best of each season! When winter comes there will be many varied trips on skis with a daypack and some with bigger packs and camping equipment. You can try dog sledding, sleeping in a snow-cave and taking a walk to a blue glacier ice-cave!  When spring arrives, a canoe trip is great fun, or climbing outdoors and spending a solo night under open skies.

Vilde Solås Tjomsland has made this great film from a winter trip with Friluftsliv.

During the semester, the goal is that you will learn to take care of yourself and be comfortable in different natural environments and in all kinds of weather. You will get a solid introduction to outdoor activities, and you will contribute to development and learning for both yourself and your friends.Whatever level you are on, you will have new experiences, challenges and develop strong relationships with your hiking companions.

Our goal for your year at Sogndal Folk High School is to increase your knowledge of nature, so that you become safer and freer when you go out into the wilderness alone or with friends.

A year you won't regret!

Mandatory: Yes

Price: Included in course price

Duration: 10-12

Meals included per day: 4

Traversing the Hardanger mountain plateau is a long, classic ski trek where we really get to test our skills, a physical challenge which gives us the oppurtunity to get close to nature over a longer period of time. We prepare all our rations ourselves, pack the sleds in tent-teams and plan the route together. We explore the fantastic plateau landscape as winter  recedes and spring approaches bringing with it the brighter, warmer, sunny days

This is a longer trip with people you have learned to work together with, have become friends with, and whom you have learned to trust. This strengthens our experiences and creates memories that will last. Underway, we also pay a visit to "Trolltunga"!

Hemsedal

Mandatory: Yes

Price: Included in course price

Duration: 3 dager

Meals included per day: 4

During the 3rd week of the spring semester, we travel to the ski resort of Hemsedal. We stay in chalets at the base of the lift area, perfect for "Ski-in - ski-out" For 3 full days we develop our skiing technique and learn new tricks. The students are divided into small groups and can choose between Telemark (free-heel skis) and downhill or ski-touring skiing. We hire a few instructors in addition to our own staff so you get plenty of instruction. There are two instruction periods during the day, and the rest of the time you are free to ski with your fellow students.

Evenings are spent together in the lounges at the chalets after an evening meal.

Vårcruise på Sognefjorden

Mandatory: Yes

Price: Included in course price

Duration: 2 dager

Meals included per day: 3

Towards the end of the school year, we depart for a two-day cruise on the Sognefjord. We have a whole vessel to ourselves, and we sail into Aurlandsjord and Nærøyfjord -where we camp overnight in the scenic fjord-hamlet of Dyrdal -a tiny, roadless community which offers plenty of opportunities -and space - for activities and mountain hikes for those who wish. We live onboard the vessel, in the local empty village school, -or, for those who prefer, camp in tents or under the sky. We barbecue our own food and enjoy a social evening aroung a camp fire. On day two, we disembark and hike along the enchanting postal trail to Styvi, where we have lunch, and for those who wish, a refreshing dip in the fjord!

Welcome to Sogndal folkehøgskule. We can offer a year of personal development by focusing on subjects of special interest. Our main subjects are within these areas:

Sport
Skiing & Climbing
Outdoor life
Outdoor life - Norway
Outdoor life & back country skiing
Photo Outdoor life
Skiing, trail biking & surf

Every year we have a limited number of foreign students. Our teaching program is practically oriented, we do not have a bespoke language learning program for foreign students. However, there are students from abroad almost every year; primarily from the US, the UK, and other European countries.
This means that for the individual student, most of the language learning takes place interacting with the Norwegian students and the teachers. If you actively work on learning Norwegian from the beginning, the challenges of language barriers will not stop you from full participation in the school program.
