Send application

The program introduces you to all types of natural environments where you can learn to adapt to varying conditions: from mountains and glaciers to fjords and sea. Study trip abroad.

Sogndal is an eldorado for outdoor activities with plenty of what Norway has to offer. The village is surrounded by deep fjords spread between high mountains and glaciers. Do you fancy a varied year outdoors with other young people and get to enjoy beautiful vistas together, carry a heavy pack to the mountains, sit in a kayak, walk on a glacier and cook on a fire? If so, this is the program for you. Versatility is a word that describes this program well.

We use the best of every season, the fall offers long mountain hikes with tents, summit hikes, climbing on glaciers, kayaking, climbing, surfing, the famous 61 degree north challenge, or campfires and fishing. At folk high school, you won't be subjected to theory on a chair behind a desk! You learn by doing stuff in practical situations, so that learning is exciting and not least experiential. Our goal for your year at Sogndal Folk High School is to increase your knowledge of the wilderness, so that you become safer and freer when you go out into the wilderness alone or with friends.

A semester you won't regret!

Mandatory: Yes

Price: Included in course price

Duration: ca 14 dager

Meals included per day: 3

After our fall break, we head south on our field trip. First stop are the mighty Alps, where we spend some days hiking in the mountains, staying at mountain chalets and enjoying some summits!

After we descend from these summits, we test the wetter elements with a day of rafting before heading towards the Mediterranean.
We start packing again, this time with everything we need to paddle on a multi-day kayaking trip. We cruise past pristeen beaches and coastal villages in crystal clear waters.

In addition to all the activities, we meet a different mountain and kayaking environment than those we are familiar with from home. We also get to experience a different and exotic cuisine.

Fjærland, fjord, fjell og bre

Mandatory: Yes

Price: Included in course price

Duration: 3 dager

Meals included per day: 4

A week or two after the school commences, we go to Fjærland together on a three-day trip. This enables us to get to know one another better, and to experience one of Norways most outstanding mountain & fjord areas. We take day hikes from base camp, and take part in activities to loosen up and become acquinted. In the evening we have dinner and gather together around the camp fire - where we chat, sing, or just relax after a day of fresh air and experiences.  After 3 days, and plenty of social activities we have built foundations we need to build friendships.

Welcome to Sogndal folkehøgskule. We can offer a year of personal development by focusing on subjects of special interest. Our main subjects are within these areas:

Sport
Skiing & Climbing
Outdoor life
Outdoor life - Norway
Outdoor life & back country skiing
Photo Outdoor life
Skiing, trail biking & surf

Every year we have a limited number of foreign students. Our teaching program is practically oriented, we do not have a bespoke language learning program for foreign students. However, there are students from abroad almost every year; primarily from the US, the UK, and other European countries.
This means that for the individual student, most of the language learning takes place interacting with the Norwegian students and the teachers. If you actively work on learning Norwegian from the beginning, the challenges of language barriers will not stop you from full participation in the school program.
