Explore nature from fjord to mountain! Learn outdoor skills, ecology, and sustainable living through hiking, kayaking, and travel — and discover that you’re not just in nature, you’re part of it.

Outdoor Life and Ecology

At Outdoor Life and Ecology you’ll experience nature not just as a place you visit, but as a part of who you are. This course combines outdoor activities, ecology, and sustainable living — from fjords to mountains and beyond.

You’ll learn how to travel safely and responsibly in nature, paddle a kayak along the coast, hike the spectacular mountains around Bergen, and explore life by the fjord right outside the school. Fana Folk High School has its own boathouse with canoes, and we work closely with BUA Hjellestad, which offers free access to equipment like skis, tents, wetsuits, SUP boards, and more.

The school cooperates with The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT), giving you access to outdoor courses, local trips, and national networks. You’ll also learn from experts at the Arboretum and Botanical Gardens (University of Bergen) — just next door — where we study plants, ecosystems, and how everything in nature is connected.

Together with Matskogen and the Bærekraftige Liv (Sustainable Living) network, you’ll gain hands-on experience in foraging, permaculture, and growing food sustainably.

During the year, you’ll go on many shorter trips in Western Norway and take part in a longer train journey through Europe, visiting ecological communities in Germany, nature-based folk high schools in Denmark, or exploring France by bike or on foot.

This is a year filled with learning, nature, and reflection — where you’ll grow in knowledge, confidence, and balance.

At Fana, there is room for you to be social, explore new interests, and have fun. In a safe environment, you can be yourself, build friendships, and develop your social skills.

This is a year where you invest in both your academic and personal growth.

Get to know Bergen

As a student at Fana Folk High School, you'll experience all that Bergen has to offer. In the city, you can enjoy theater, concerts, and exhibitions. Bergen also hosts a variety of festivals. During the school year, there are international film festivals, theater festivals, and several music festivals in the city.

When you have some free time, you can explore the city on your own—hike up Fløyen, grab a coffee at one of the cozy cafés, or simply enjoy life in our vibrant city.

Creative courses and exciting electives

We offer a wide range of courses that create a diverse and creative environment at the school.

In addition to your main courses, you can choose from many electives, giving you the chance to try something new and develop new skills.

Educational and inspiring trips

We go on trips throughout the year, both within Norway and abroad. At Fana, we have school-wide trips and class-specific trips where you travel with your course group.

These study trips give you deeper academic insights and the chance to experience other cultures and environments.

Get to know norwegian language and culture

During your stay in Bergen, you'll make friends, learn some Norwegian, and explore Norwegian culture and society. We have many international students - some come to learn Norwegian, while others choose another subject.

Our language courses are designed for both beginners and those with some prior knowledge of Norwegian.

Information about language

Most of our teaching is in Norwegian, but we offer some translation to English.

Check the course descriptions, or send us an e-mail, for more information about the langugage requirements for each course. We'll be happy to answer any questions you have.
