Experience life as a viking from Nordfjordeid, Norway’s Viking destination. Take part in our heritage, learn how the Vikings lived, and row the Myklebust Ship at its launch.

On the Viking course, you’ll learn outdoor skills, self-sufficiency, and traditional craftsmanship. You’ll harvest ingredients from the nature and learn how to cook delicious food from it. You’ll head out on local trips with fishing rods and campfires, cooking under open skies.

We work closely with Sagastad, the Viking centre in western Norway. This means you'll have the chance to take part in rowing the Myklebust Ship during its launch, Norway’s largest reconstructed Viking ship and a major event.

Some of the things you’ll experience:

🎒 Viking expeditions to Iceland, Gudvangen and local trips in western Norway
🚣‍️ Row the Myklebust Ship
🎣 Fish in fjords, rivers and lakes
⛺ Host a Viking market and set up camps with local Vikings
⚔  Learn the basics of sword fighting and archery
📖 History evenings in the longhouse
🐎 Ride and get to know the Norwegian Fjord Horse
🌪️Chase the autumn storms along the coast

You’ll also take on the role of a craftsman, making everything from your own cutlery and tablet-woven bands to Viking shoes. Work with metal, wood, wool, leather, and clay to create copies of Viking artefacts.

For the Vikings, horses were vital for travel and work. Our school has two equestrian courses and close ties with the Norwegian Fjord Horse Centre, giving you the opportunity to explore horse-related electives, or something completely different.

With nine main courses and over twenty electives, you can spend the year doing what matters to you.

You’ll challenge yourself and find your own path. Maybe you want to grow stronger, both physically and mentally? Perhaps you’d like to sew your own jacket, spend your days with horses, explore Viking history or learn how to save lives?

Whatever course you choose, you’ll meet teachers who love what they do and care about their students. They’re skilled, genuine and ready to guide you so you can get the most out of your year with us.

Our folk high school lies between the wild coastline of Stad and the mighty Jostedalsbreen glacier. Nordfjordeid is just the right size. Big enough to offer what you need, yet small enough to feel personal and close.

If you want to uncover hidden gems in Norway and beyond, this is the place. You’ll experience the best of Western Norway, from surfing and swimming in Hoddevika to hiking and kayaking in breathtaking nature.

In the middle of winter, we head to the Philippines for sunshine, warmth and white beaches. You might snorkel with turtles, sleep in a beach bungalow or go island-hopping. You’ll also meet locals and experience a different way of life that stays with you long after the trip.
