Over many years at the jazz program at Sund Folk High School, a thorough and self-developing learning environment has been established.
Many of today’s leading contemporary musicians have spent a year at Sund Folk High School — and that’s no coincidence. Here, students get to work intensively alongside talented peers and dedicated teachers.
The teaching methodology is practical and based on learning by ear, aiming to keep the distance between what you hear, what you want to play, and the technical skill to perform it as short as possible.
Time is valuable, and we want results to be achieved quickly and constructively. Therefore, we tailor the curriculum for each student — individually, in groups, and by instrument.
Ensemble Playing
The interaction and dynamics within the class are crucial to making the year at Sund as rewarding as possible.
We put together a group of musicians whom we believe will complement each other in the best possible way, and we greatly value the initiative students take within the group to organize tours, concert series, jam sessions, and more.
Guest Teachers
Throughout the year, guest teachers are invited to hold workshops, seminars, and instrumental sessions. They are brought in as needed and according to the interests and requests of the students.
We work closely with the Jazz Department at NTNU in Trondheim. Twice a year, the fourth-year jazz students from NTNU come to Sund, where we learn from each other and meet for collaborative ensemble work.
