FriHAVsliv offer some of the best options for maritime and coastal activities and outdoor life. You will have a year full of amazing and challenging activities and exiting nature experiences. There are many and varied options and opportunities, and the final programme will be agreed upon in collaboration between teacher and students. FriHAVsliv is guaranteed to give you a unique and unforgettable year!

Large portions of the year will take place at sea in the fresh air, often in a wetsuit. Its’ therefore important that you enjoy being active. Throughout the schoolyear we will engage in many activities, amongst others:

During the school year sea eagles will become a part of your everyday life, and when we are out on trips otters, seals and orcas can all become regular sights. We are planning to have frequent multiday trips, sleeping in everything from hammocks to glamping.

In addition to all this you will, also have the option of acquiring several licenses, for example Boating licence, våttkort (Norwegian sea kayaking licence) and potentially a PADI scuba diving licence.

The Øyrekka archipelago is for many a unique and undiscovered place. We will make full use of the area and all it has to offer, from Sula in the south to Halten in the north. We will take a dive in to the local history and culture.

  • Sula – a known gathering point for artists and creative people both local and foreign. The island has both restaurant and pub, and Sula glamping will soon open.
  • Bogøya – a picturesque gem, known for the Supen Pøbb eatery, serving the world’s greatest fish and chips. The island is also home to Handelshuset Skatvold – a general store fully restored to its original form from the previous century.
  • Sørburøya – one of the most remote inhabited places of Norwegian coast.
  • Sauøya – now abandoned, but with a working chapel, store, and Fishmonger. Her we can experience what the coastal communities would have looked like a few decades ago.
  • Halten – the northernmost of the old fishing settlements. Today a protected and preserved cultural heritage site, giving access to centuries of history.
  • Vingleia lighthouse – placed on one of the outermost islets on the edge of the open ocean, the former lighthouse keeper's residence can house 12 people and will be used for overnight trips throughout the year.
  • The historical Trøndelag region: the ting mound in Frosta, the Medieval farm of Stiklastadir, Norway’s biggest grave mound at Leka – an enormous monument to the old sea kings, The Sverresborg museum in Trondheim and the historical Nidaros.

The school is a so-called liberal folk high school, which means we do not base our values on a particular faith or belief, but on equality and respect for the individual’s integrity. Until our brand new campus is built, we hire a huge houseboat / floating hotel as our base. The floating hotel will contain everything you need; classroom, cafeteria, kitchen, doubleroom (you share room with a roommate), office for the employees and living rooms.
