The Memorial Fund has closed down
During the nearly 40 years The Memorial Fund has existed, we have awarded more than 1000 scholarships to foreign students for one year at a Norwegian folk high school. This scholarship was established to promote cultural exchange between foreign countries and the Norwegian folk high schools.
From 2010 The Memorial Fund has closed down, so the academic year 2010-11 is the last year of scholarships. This year we have awarded 18 scholarships.
Folk High Schools
Learning for life sums up the folk high school experience. Folk high schools are one-year boarding schools offering a variety of exciting non-traditional and non-academic subjects, as well as academic subjects. The idea of folk high schools is learning for life, an opportunity to grow both individually, socially, and academically in small learning communities where all students live on campus in close contact with staff and their fellow students. One important part of the folk high school experience is to form a community, a common bond within the student body, in class and out of class.

What Does The Scholarship Funding Cover?
The Scholarship covers food, lodging and some excursions. There is no tuition fee in Norwegian folk high schools, but students who are accepted need to bring money for books and teaching materials.
Possible Additional Financial Aid
Both a travel grant and some pocket money can be awarded in addition to the ordinary scholarship. Only those applicants with limited funds should apply for additional financial aid, because it is granted based on means test.

Important Information
It is up to the Board of Memorial Fund to place the individual bursary recipients at the different folk high schools. The Memorial Fund cooperates with about 30 % of the Norwegian folk high schools. However, in the placement process, the Memorial Fund Office takes into consideration the applicants individual preferences regarding schools.
